Voisin, Hall Claim Second X Games Medals of Season

By Andrew Gauthier

U.S. Freeski Team member Maggie Voisin earned her best X Games big air finish on Saturday, claiming the silver medal in Hafjell, Norway. This is Maggie’s second X Games medal since her return to competition from ACL surgery.

“I can’t even begin to explain how happy I am after today,” said Maggie. “It’s so exciting to grab my fourth podium of the season and my second ever big air medal. More than anything, I am just so proud of my skiing from today and how healthy my body feels. I didn’t expect to feel and ski this well after my knee surgery in April and for that, I am super grateful.”

Maggie’s performance is sure to set aside any potential lingering doubt that her knee is ready for competition. Fresh off of a heli-skiing trip with U.S. Freeski alumnus and legend Tom Wallisch, she quickly transitioned from the powder to the park. Maggie stomped massive tricks with consistency including a left-side double cork 1260 safety, a left-side rodeo 900 with a unique rotation, and a right-side 900 tail. Maggie’s podium today marks her sixth career X Games medal.

Megan Oldham of Canada won the event on the last run landing a beautiful double cork 1260 on her final jump of the competition to secure her first X Games medal. Norway’s own Johanne Killi rounded out the podium in third. Johanne also delivered in the final moments of the competition to move into podium contention.

Alex Hall took the second medal of the day for the U.S. Freeski Team as well as his second X Games Norway medal of the season by winning knuckle huck gold. Alex jumped from the bottom of the pack to first place by landing a switch tail butter 1440 to cap off his round. Announcer Tom Wallisch called it the most difficult trick of the day.

"This is 100% my favorite competition," said Alex. "We are all out here to have a good time. They groomed the landing so it was nice and soft and we are able to go as big as we wanted to. I was super nervous for my last trick, but I’m hyped to put it down. What a fun night."

In men's freeski big air,  Alex and 2020 X Games Aspen slopestyle gold medalist Colby Stevenson took to the massive kicker in Hafjell. Although they did not reach the podium, they put on a show landing 1440’s, 1620’s, and 1800’s complete with unique grab combinations.

Antoine Adelisse earned his first X Games medal taking the gold. Norway’s Birk Ruud took silver and Switzerland’s Andri Ragettli took the bronze.

In women’s snowboard big air, Jamie Anderson, who has gone undefeated in slopestyle competition this season, finished just outside the podium in fourth place. Jamie landed a cab double 900 and a frontside 1080 with her classic effortless style.

Austria’s Anna Gasser took gold, Japan’s Miyabi Onitsuka took silver, and Canada’s Laurie Blouin closed out the podium with the bronze.

The final stop of the 2019-20 U.S. Rev Tour NorAm is complete and U.S. Freeski and Snowboard Team athletes took to the snow at the brand new Woodward Park City with vigor, claiming just under 60% of the available podium positions. The new relationship developing between U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Woodward Park City is already proving to be fruitful for our U.S. athletes and event organizers.

“I want to thank Woodward Park City. They rolled out the red carpet for the final stop of the Revolution Tour. We received positive feedback from both the athletes and the coaches on the venue set-up, facilities, and overall support for the event. We are excited to build on the success of the first Rev Tour at Woodward Park City. Having the ability to host high-level events in our hometown creates new opportunities for our snowboard and freeski athletes. We look forward to building on our partnership with Woodward Park City in the future and are hoping that this event is the first of many to come.”
      - Eric Webster - U.S. Ski & Snowboard Senior Director of Events

With great facilities and courses dialed in for the week, competition kicked off on Monday, March 1 with snowboard slopestyle competition. U.S. Rookie Snowboard Team members Ty Schnorrbusch and Courtney Rummel took second and third respectively.

“I’m super stoked to put a couple runs down today and end up second,” Ty said enthusiastically. “Woodward Park City is super sick and I’m excited to continue to ride here the rest of the week and moving forward into the future.”

For the men, Olympic silver medalist Kyle Mack and U.S. Snowboard teammate Lyon Farrell went one and two respectively. The Rev Tour often times offers a chance for young athletes to compete and ride with pro-level athletes. This scenario fosters a great learning environment and competition experience. Although young athletes may have a challenge ahead of them to reach the podium, the benefits, in the long run, are priceless.

The men followed suit offering up an American sweep of their own consisting of Hunter Henderson in first, Tim Ryan in second, and Kiernan Fagan in third. Hunter also secured the Overall Big Air Rev Tour Championship

My family said the venue was awesome because they could watch everything from the bottom of the course. I definitely am looking forward to more events at Woodward.”

Final Snowboard Slopestyle World Cup Cancelled

By Andrew Gauthier
March, 4 2020

FIS (International Ski Federation) announced the cancellation of the final snowboard slopestyle World Cup in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic on Wednesday, originally scheduled for March 20-21, 2020. The decision to cancel the event is in response to restrictions imposed by the Czech government over concerns regarding the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.

The local organizing committee in Spindleruv Mlyn alerted FIS to the fact that the Czech government would be reviewing potential health risks associated with all upcoming sport and cultural gatherings that could see 5,000 or more individuals in attendance. With the emphasis put on the fan and spectator experience of the SnowJam competition, the local organizers decided that it would not be feasible to hold the competition in light of the decisions taken by the Czech government.

According to FIS, it is unlikely that a replacement venue will be found at this late stage in the season. If the final snowboard slopestyle World Cup is not rescheduled, the current 2019-20 FIS Cup Standings will serve as the final rankings.

U.S. Snowboard Rookie Team member Dusty Henricksen would finish as the top American in third-place behind Japanese rider Ruki Tobita in first and Kiwi Tiarn Collins in second. Dusty had a breakthrough season collecting his first World Cup win in his second World Cup ever at the Land Rover U.S. Grand Prix at Mammoth. Dusty also finished in a respectable ninth place at the 2020 Laax Open. Teammates and pro team members Judd Henkes and Sean FitzSimons would finish fourth and ninth respectively.

Jamie Anderson and Julia Marino would serve as the top finishers for the women of the U.S. Snowboard Team both tied for eighth. Julia and Jamie both have collected impressive results this World Cup season. Julia won the 2020 Laax Open slopestyle, while Jamie won the Mammoth Grand Prix. Katie Omerod of Great Britain would earn the Crystal Globe in the top spot.

Although the news of the cancellation is not the ideal way to end the snowboard slopestyle World Cup season, it does not take away from the impressive accomplishments of U.S. Snowboard Team athletes throughout the 2019-20 World Cup Season. Be sure to tune in next season for another exciting year of snowboard World Cup competition.

U.S. Riders Take on Sierra Nevada

The FIS Snowboardcross World Cup makes its return to the highly-regarded resort of Sierra Nevada March 7-8 for the fourth of five World Cup events of the season. U.S. riders are eager to take to the course in Sierra Nevada, including two-time 2019 FIS World Champion Mick Dierdorff.

“Our team has been having an awesome camp in Austria and we are fired up for the last two World Cups of the season,” said Mick. “The venue in Spain historically has a bigger and faster course than we have seen so far this season. Big and fast is what I love, so I hope to wrap up this season with another podium under my belt.”

This is the first World Cup at Sierra Nevada since the 2012-13 season. Although the southern region of Spain is mostly known for its beautiful weather and the stunning Mediterranean Sea, Sierra Nevada will host competition in one of the few areas in the country with enough snow to cater to a World Cup contest.

U.S. snowboardcross athletes have a history of performing well in Spain. Last year at the Baqueira Beret World Cup, Lindsey Jacobellis earned third place and Mick finished just outside of the podium in fourth. U.S. athletes are also coming into the event after finding World Cup success this season. U.S. Snowboardcross Team members Alex Deibold, Senna Leith, and Faye Gulini all claimed third-place finishes at the previous stop in Big White, Canada.

With prior success in Spain and the momentum carrying them into the contest, the U.S. will be hoping to race their way to the podium.

Five Americans Compete at X Games Norway 2020

By Andrew Gauthier
March, 3 2020

The X Games tour serves as a major part of the winter’s elite-level freeski and snowboard event calendar, and the 2019-20 competition season came complete with a special bonus. Alongside contests in the southern hemisphere, the season kicked off in August with X Games Norway 2019, and this year, we are going to close it out with the 2020 edition March 7-8 at Hafjell Resort.

U.S. Freeski Pro Team member and 2020 X Games Aspen slopestyle bronze medalist Maggie Voisin is especially psyched about heading to X Games Norway 2020.

“I am so happy to be headed back to beautiful Norway for X Games this week,” said Maggie. “X Games Norway hasn’t included slopestyle since 2017, so I’m extra excited to be competing in both events (slopestyle and big air). Also, I didn’t have the chance to compete earlier this year in Norway, so this time around is a nice second chance. This will be my second to last contest of the season and I’m looking forward to finishing strong.”

U.S. athletes have already racked up numerous X Games podiums this season including six gold, two silver and four bronze medals across Norway and Aspen events. A few of these medals can be attributed to U.S. Freeski Pro Team members Alex Hall and Colby Stevenson. Alex returns to Norway as the defending X Games Norway big air gold medalist, while Colby is the reigning gold medalist in both slopestyle and knuckle huck from X Games Aspen.

Alex and Colby will have to fend off the likes of 11-time X Games medalist Henrik Harlaut of Sweden and Norway’s own Olympic gold medalist Oystein Braaten.

The U.S. Snowboard Team is also rolling into competition with a pair of heavy hitters. Coming hot off her eighth Burton U.S. Open slopestyle title and also serving as the defending X Games Aspen slopestyle gold medalist is Jamie Anderson. Jamie has had an unrivaled season winning every slopestyle event she has entered. Jamie also has her work cut out for her competing against a hungry back-to-back defending X Games Norway big air gold medalist in Austrian Anna Gasser.

Joining Jamie is U.S. Rookie Team member Dusty Henricksen who, for anyone that’s been paying attention, is now fully on the radar as one of the top riders in the world. Dusty stacked victories at the Youth Olympic Games, the Land Rover U.S. Grand Prix, and a silver medal at the 2020 Burton U.S. Open. Meanwhile, Dusty is blowing minds on Instagram and landing “never-been-dones,” like the backside quad cork 1800 that he landed last week for the first time ever in snowboard slopestyle competition.

Dusty’s competition also includes a long list of heavy hitters, such as the 2018 Olympic slopestyle gold medalist Sebastian Toutant and the 2020 Burton U.S. Open Champion Yuki Kadono.

X Games fans in the United States can watch more than eight hours of live competition coverage from X Games Norway March 7-8, on the ESPN App and X Games YouTube, X Games Facebook and X Games Twitter pages. Tune in live to catch all the action.

The final stop of the 16th Annual Rev Tour NorAm is underway this week at the new state-of-the-art Woodward Park City, Utah. Freeski and snowboard slopestyle and big air competition will take place starting Monday, March 2 through Friday, March 6.

Just down the road from U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s Center of Excellence, Woodward’s new facilities have already received overwhelming praise from U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes. Alongside an all-female mini-camp focused on progression from March 6-7, the Rev Tour is just the beginning of what should be a long and fruitful relationship for both organizations.

U.S. Freeski Rookie Team member Deven Fagan shared his thoughts about competing at the new facilities.

“I’m so hyped to compete at the brand new Woodward Park City,” said Deven enthusiastically. “I’m looking forward to skiing and competing with some of my friends who I haven’t been able to ski with this year due to a very busy competition and travel schedule. Hopefully, I can get another podium and continue to gather some very crucial competition experience at a great venue.”

Joining Deven from the U.S. Freeski Rookie team is Hunter Henderson, Grace Henderson, Rell Harwood, Marin Hamill, Cody LaPlante, as well as pro team members Kiernan Fagan and Hunter Hess.

U.S. Snowboard Rookie Team member Jade Thurgood also shared her excitement for this week’s competition.

“I’m really stoked to be competing at the new Woodward Park City, especially after I dislocated my shoulder a couple of weeks ago,” she said. “I’ve ridden there before and it’s a really cool set up. I can’t wait to see what they’re going to be offering us from a course perspective for the competition. I bet it is going to be really sweet.”

Joining Jade this week from the U.S. Snowboard team are teammates Courtney Rummel and Ty Schnorrbusch. For the men, pro team members Kyle Mack, Lyon Farrell, Sean FitzSimons, Luke Winkelmann as well as rookie team members Jake Canter and Dusty Henricksen are set to compete.

Dusty is coming off a spectacular performance at the 2020 Burton U.S. Open where he earned second-place and landed the first-ever backside quad cork 1800 in elite-level slopestyle competition. Dusty will be looking to close out his season with what would be the fifth podium of his break out winter.

If you are in Park City, be sure to go check out the new Woodward Park City and also witness the final Rev Tour NorAm stop of the season. See the details about Woodward Park City and the competition schedule below.

U.S. Snowboard Pro Team member Jamie Anderson earned her eighth U.S. Open victory in Friday’s slopestyle finals, and dedicated her win to the late Jake Burton Carpenter.

“This feels really good,” said Jamie. “I can’t believe my first run held. This one feels like the best one yet for sure. I love snowboarding and I love this event. Big shout out to Jake [Burton Carpenter], I definitely rode for him and everything he has brought to the industry that we all get to enjoy.”

Jamie’s win serves as her fourth-consecutive contest victory, including X Games Aspen, the Land Rover U.S. Grand Prix and Dew Tour. Not to mention, she was named "Women’s Rider of The Year," at the SNOWBOARDER Awards while at Dew Tour.

Jamie’s winning run included a backside lipslide, boardslide 270 out, backside 540, switch backside 540, boardslide 450 out on cannon box, and a cab double cork 900. Jamie’s cab double cork 900 is the trick that kept her out of finals after two failed attempts in last year’s semi-final round, so it's only fitting that its what closed out her gold medal run at the open.

The contest was chock-full of progression from the women including double cork 1080 attempts and a double crippler from Austria’s Anna Gasser on the first transition feature.

“It’s inspiring as ever,” said Jamie, speaking to the level of riding by the whole field. “I think this is my 13th U.S. Open and holy smokes, the level of progression is unbelievable. I’m so happy to be here with all the youngsters. They are setting my heart on fire with what they are doing to the sport. I’m just happy to be out here, almost 30, and still charging. I'm feeling better than ever. I used to think 30 is old, but I'm still getting into my prime.”

Anna earned the silver, and Japan’s Miyabi Onitsuka took the bronze. U.S. Snowboard Pro Team member Hailey Langland finished fifth.

For the men, U.S. Rookie Team member and first-place qualifier Dusty Henricksen earned silver, and defending champion Red Gerard took the bronze. Although Dusty scored victories at the Youth Olympic Games and the Land Rover U.S Grand Prix this season, it’s clear a star was born at the 2020 U.S. Open.

“I was just trying to let it ride. This has literally been my dream since I started snowboarding. This has been the most life-changing season I have ever had and I can’t ask for more. I’m pretty hyped!”

Dusty had two very memorable tricks in his run including a switch noseslide pretzel 630 cork Melon on the cannon box dubbed the “Dust Roll” by Tom Monterosso, editor of SNOWBOARDER Magazine. In addition, he landed a backside quad cork 1800, which has never been landed before in elite-level slopestyle competition. Dusty tried it for the first time ever on run two.

“That was the first time I’ve ever tried that trick,” said Dusty after run two. “I figured what’s another flip. I’m pretty stunned I was able to put it to my feet.”

Although Dusty didn’t land it cleanly on his first try, he perfected it on his third run and second ever attempt. One of the most decorated competitive snowboarders in history, Canadian rider Mark McMorris, called the backside quad cork 1800 the scariest trick in snowboarding.

When asked how Dusty’s been able to keep his composure on the U.S. Open stage, his answer made it clear that his attitude towards competition is very much ahead of his time.

“It’s a pretty mellow vibe out here,” he said. “I’m just riding with the boys so how can you get too scared.”

Japan’s Yuki Kadono finished off the podium and took victory for the first time since his gold medal performance in 2015.

Competition continues at the 38th Annual Burton U.S. Open Saturday with men and women’s modified halfpipe competition. Head over to Vail, Colo. or tune in below to catch the action live.

This week the 38th Annual U.S. Open celebrates the life of Burton founder Jake Burton Carpenter, who passed away in November. From Feb. 24-29 in Vail, Colo., U.S. Snowboard Team members alongside the world’s top riders will remember the snowboarding community’s greatest champion through special events, concerts, and elite level snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle competition. Coming off a slopestyle win at the Dew Tour, the defending 2019 U.S. Open Champion Red Gerard is set to drop in for Jake.

“The U.S. Open has always been the best event of the year,” said Red. “We can almost always count on nice weather, a perfect progressive course, and the vibe and feel is all time! This year will be a very special one as we remember Jake. I am just stoked to come back and compete and have a good week with all my friends.”

Joining Red from the men’s U.S. Snowboard Slopestyle Team is Luke Winkelmann, Sean FitzSimons, Jake Canter, Judd Henkes, Lyon Farrell, Kyle Mack, and 2020 Land Rover U.S. Grand Prix Champion Dusty Henricksen. For the women, Julia Marino is making her return to competition following a forearm injury at X Games Aspen 2020. Julia will be joined by six-time champion Jamie Anderson, and the always stylish Hailey Langland.

This year’s Burton U.S.Open slopestyle course will see an updated course design based on rider feedback, incorporating more speed and flow throughout.

The defending women’s halfpipe U.S. Open Champion, Maddie Mastro, is also ready for the week in Vail. At 19 years old, the U.S. Open has been running for double her lifetime.

“I’m excited to be back at the Open,” said Maddie. “It’s always one of the best contests of the year. Every year my goal is to just have fun and snowboard, which is what the U.S. Open is all about to me. Being the defending champion doesn’t change that goal for me, I’m just going to focus on having fun and riding.”

Joining Maddie from the women’s U.S. Snowboard Halfpipe Team is rookie team member Tessa Maud. For the men, Chase Blackwell, Lucas Foster, Jason Wolle, Jack Coyne, Jake Pates, Ryan Wachendorfer, Chase Josey, Toby Miller, and Taylor Gold are ready to compete in what should be a new environment for everyone involved. The U.S. Open halfpipe venue has been completely reformed, combining a 13-foot enhanced minipipe creatively transitioning into a 22-foot superpipe.

The world’s best snowboarders descend on Vail, Colo. Feb 24-29 to battle it out for the coveted Burton U.S.Open halfpipe and slopestyle titles and the $373,000 overall prize purse. Don’t miss your chance to see it in person or tune it below to catch all the action live.
