American ski racing lost a giant Monday, when George Macomber passed away at age 88 in his sleep. George Macomber, a national champion in downhill and combined, whose surname is synonymous with ski racing in New England, died December 13, 2015 at age 88.

Raised in Massachusetts, Macomber raced for MIT, and was rarely off the podium. A slalom specialist, he nonetheless won the U.S. national downhill and combined championships in 1949. He was named to the U.S. Ski Team for the 1948 and 1952 Olympics, and for the 1950 World Championships at Aspen.

COURCHEVEL, France (Dec. 16) - Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) combined for top ten finishes in an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom in Courchevel. Mancuso was sixth and Shiffrin ninth as Tina Maze of Slovenia continued her dominance, winning her fourth straight GS. The World Cup now heads for Are, Sweden with giant slalom and slalom Wednesday and Thursday.

BANSKO, Bulgaria (Feb. 19) - Nolan Kasper (Warren, VT) and Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) produced strong second runs to finish sixth and seventh at an Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom in Bansko that saw Austrian Marcel Hirscher win. Kasper, standing 23rd after the first run, laid down the second fastest final run as Ligety landed in the top-10 for the second straight race.

ADELBODEN, Switzerland (Jan. 7) - Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) was fourth in the classic Adelboden giant slalom Saturday to retain his discipline lead and jump to third in the overall standings. Marcel Hirscher of Austria won for the second straight race to boost his Audi FIS Alpine World Cup overall lead. American Tim Jitloff (Reno, NV) was 20th as varied snow conditions and sleet made for an extremely challenging second run.
