STOWE, VT (Nov. 1, 2016) – The top U16 alpine racers in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s (USSA) Eastern region will compete for regional titles this season at the Ronnie Berlack U16 Eastern Region Championships Grand Prix, named in honor of the late U.S. Ski Team athlete. The event, sponsored by Nordica, will take place March 9-14, 2017 at Stowe Mountain Resort, VT.
KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (March 8) - Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) captured a historic giant slalom victory Saturday in Kranjska Gora to become the first man in Audi FIS Alpine World Cup history to have won six times at the same venue. The stunning 23rd win of his career also moved Ligety within 50 points of Austrian Marcel Hirscher, who finished fourth, for the 2014 World Cup giant slalom title. The title will be decided March 15 at the World Cup Finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Universal Sports Network will broadcast the Kranjska Gora giant slalom at 11 a.m. ET.
JASNA, Slovakia (Feb. 28) - Paula Moltzan (Lakeville, MN; Buck Hill Ski Team/Ski and Snowboard Club Vail) continued her strong skiing Friday with fourth in the FIS Alpine Junior World Championships slalom, just .49 from the podium. Joining Moltzan in the top 10 was teammate Lila Lapanja (Incline Village, NV; Sugar Bowl Academy/Diamond Peak) in sixth. Foreste Peterson (Berkeley, CA; Squaw Valley Ski Team) also put in a solid performance to finish 19th behind race winner Petra Vhlova of Slovakia. Moltzan was sixth just a day earlier in the giant slalom.
SOELDEN, Austria (Oct. 27) - Veteran Tina Maze of Slovenia charged to a strong Audi FIS Alpine World Cup season opening giant slalom win with a .42 margin over Austria's Kathrin Zettel on the Rettenbach Glacier in Soelden. It was Maze's third Soelden win but first since 2005. It was a tough day for the U.S. Ski Team as defending champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) was off the pace in the first run before going out in the second after hooking her left hand on a gate.
OFTERSCHWANG, Germany (March 10) – After leading the first run, Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) powered through softening snow to finish third Sunday in Ofterschwang - her fifth Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom podium of the season. World Cup overall and giant slalom champion Tina Maze won the race to set up a winner take all showdown for the slalom title at World Cup Finals as she jumped eight points ahead of Shiffrin in the standings. The race is set for March 16 in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
