Snowboard Points
U.S. Ski & Snowboard Snowboard competitor members receive national points for each scored competition in which they finish without disqualification. Competitors begin their points profile with 0.00 points and may increase these points to a maximum of 1000.00. Points are used to rank competitors nationally on the Snowboard National Ranking List.
The list provides competition organizers with the data to establish a start order for competitions. This also allows competitors to compare their performance against the performance of riders in other parts of the country whom they may not compete against.
The Snowboarding National Ranking List is based on a "place-points" scale. This simply means that for every scored competition sanctioned through U.S. Ski & Snowboard, points are awarded from 1st place to a maximum of 100th place.
The exact calculations of the points awarded to each finishing place is determined by the competition level, and the average points of the best five riders starting the event. Once the competition level and average points have been determined the event is the applied to the appropriate points scale. For more information on how points are calculated, see Chapter 2 of your U.S. Ski & Snowboard Competition Guide, located in the References section.

The U.S. Ski & Snowboard National Points List will be run at the beginning and the end of the competition season and is maintained for posterity purposes. This list is not used in any current criteria.
To ensure your membership is processed for inclusion on any list, your membership must be completed at least three days prior to the closing date. Registrations are not considered complete until all requirements are met, including background screening and completion of SafeSport education where required. It is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure their U.S. Ski & Snowboard membership registration is complete. You can contact U.S. Ski & Snowboard member services at 435-647-2666 to check the status of your registration.
To compete in a U.S. Ski & Snowboard Sanctioned Event, an athlete must be a member of U.S. Ski & Snowboard. To compete in a FIS Sanctioned Event, an athlete must be a Competitor member of U.S. Ski & Snowboard and be active with FIS. Athletes who inscribe with FIS will only receive their FIS number and be able to compete in FIS events at the valid date of the next FIS List.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard and FIS points are not continuously updated; they are recalculated for each new list. For more information on how points are calculated, see Chapter 2 of the Snowboard Competition Guide, available in the Resources section above. Closing and valid dates for the points list are also listed above.
FIS Points Injury Status or Points Protection Situations (sickness/injury, professional obligations, military service, pregnancy)
Competitors who are unable to compete in sufficient scored events to maintain their seed points due to injury, illness, studies, military obligations, pregnancy, or church commitments may protect their points through Injury Status. Injury Status cannot be requested for lack of calendar opportunities. U.S. Ski & Snowboard and FIS membership must be renewed each year to maintain points, even when an athlete has Injury Status protection.
There is no national Injury Status or points protection system for snowboard, but there is for FIS. The rules for FIS Injury Status or Points Protection include
4.6 Conditions for acquiring Injury Status
4.6.1 Only athletes who have made 6 starts (no matter which events) or fewer within the season are eligible to apply for Injury Status.
4.6.2 The athlete cannot participate in FIS competitions for 90 days after the injury date. If the athlete has started within the 90-day period after the injury date, Injury Status will not be granted or will be removed and their BL points will be calculated without the 4.3.3 protection.
4.6.3 Athletes must remain registered as active with FIS to apply for and maintain Injury Status.
4.7 Professional Obligations, Military Service or Pregnancy
4.7.1 If a National Ski Association submits an application for a “study, military status or pregnancy” certifying that an athlete will not be able to compete because of professional obligations (studies), military service or pregnancy, and has indicated why and how long the athlete was prevented from competing, the procedure will be handled according to art 4.6.
4.7.2 Applications for status due to professional obligations or military service must be submitted to the FIS Office prior to the beginning of the professional obligations.
For the full Snowboard/Freeski/Freestyle FIS Points Rules see here.
Application
To apply for FIS Injury Status or points protection, you must complete this form and return it to Ashley Deibold along with a letter from the athlete's doctor that includes their name, their actual date of injury, a description of the injury, and an estimate of how long they will be out of competition.
Injury Status or points protection requests must be submitted to U.S. Ski & Snowboard by April 15 of the competition season.
