SALT LAKE CITY (July 20) – Utah will remain one of the nation’s leading states for winter action sports with an announcement Friday of five major on snow events leading up to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert, Jeff Robbins, President and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission and U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Bill Marolt made the joint announcement at the Utah State Capitol that the Olympic governing body will bring some of its most important World Cup and Sprint U.S.

Montpelier, VT) posted the USA's best overall Tour de Ski finish in history with seventh, skiing to the third-fastest time of the day as she battled rain, sleet and snow for 9k up Alpe Cermis on Sunday. Noah Hoffman (Aspen, CO) also earned the best ever finish for U.S. men in 25th. CRAFTSBURY, VT (March 31) - Veteran Kris Freeman (Andover, NH/Ski and Snowboard Club Vail) capped off the season with his 15th career U.S. title, winning the 50k mass start in Craftsbury. Freeman battled teammate Tad Elliott (Durango,CO/Ski and Snowboard Club Vail) the entire distance with a mind boggling 32 laps on the 1.5k Craftsbury course, winning by three seconds. Tim Reynolds (Craftsbury, VT/Craftsbury Nordic) took bronze.
CHANGCHUN, China (Jan. 5) – The U.S. took a pair of fifth place finishes at the FIS World Cup aerials opener in Changchun. Emily Cook (Belmont, MA) and Dylan Ferguson (Amesbury, MA) put up a strong fight against fierce international competition. Both Cook and Ferguson had World Cup podiums last season.
PARK CITY, UT (Dec. 21) – The 2012-13 aerials season kicked off with the Columbia Super Continental Cup at the Utah Olympic Park. Team Academy student, Jonathan Lillis (Rochester, NY) was the top U.S. male in third and Kiley McKinnon (Madison, CT) was the first to represent the U.S. women in fourth. Lillis competed two jumps that he learned over the summer for the first time in competition. Day two of the Columbia Super Continental Cup continues tomorrow with live coverage beginning at 11:15 a.m. MST on the USSA Network (www.usskiteam.com). Men's and women's finals will begin at 2:25 p.m.
U.S. Alpine Ski Team athlete Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT) and U.S. Freestyle Ski Team athlete Ashley Caldwell (Ashburn, VA) have been nominated for the Utah State of Sports Award in the Pro/Olympian Male and Pro/Olympian Female categories. In 2012, the Utah Sports Commission created the Governor’s State of Sport Awards, which celebrates Utah’s sports industry and honors excellence in high school, amateur, collegiate, adaptive, Olympic and professional sports.
