After bringing home 16 medals from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, including eight gold, many athletes on the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team are back on their respective World Cup circuits to finish out the 2018 season.

FIS Women’s Ski World Cup - Crans-Montana, SUI
The fight for crystal globes continue with a super-G and alpine combined weekend March 3-4 in Crans-Montana. Laurenne Ross (Bend, Ore.), Stacey Cook (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.), Breezy Johnson (Victor, Idaho), Alice Merryweather (Hingham, Mass.) and Alice McKennis (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) are expected to race.

FIS Men’s Ski World Cup - Kranjska Gora, SLO
The men’s tech team will take to the slopes in Kranjska Gora with giant slalom on March 3 and slalom on March 4. Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) and Tommy Ford (Bend, Ore.) are among the athletes expected to compete.

FIS Freeski World Cup - Silvaplana, SUI
U.S. Freeski Team members Julia Krass (Hanover, N.H.), Willie Borm (Chaska, Minn.) and Cody LaPlante (Truckee, Calif.), along with U.S. athletes Quinn Wolferman, Tim Ryan and Ryan McElmon, will compete in the second to last slopestyle world cup of the season at Silvaplana. Qualifications will take place on Friday, March 2 followed by finals on Saturday, March 3.

FIS Freestyle World Cup - Tazawako, JPN
Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) will continue her quest for the overall moguls World Cup title this weekend with single moguls and dual moguls World Cup events March 3-4 in Tazawako. Olympic team members Morgan Schild (Pittsford, N.Y.), Troy Murphy (Bethel, Maine), Brad Wilson (Butte, Mont.), Emerson Smith (Dover, Vt.), Tess Johnson (Vail, Colo.), Keaton McCargo (Telluride, Colo.) and Casey Andringa (Boulder, Colo.) will also be competing.

FIS Freestyle World Cup - Sunny Valley, RUS
Tania Prymak (Goshen, N.Y.), Brant Crossan (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Tyler Wallasch (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) will represent the U.S. at the ski cross World Cup in Sunny Valley. Qualifications will take place Friday, March 2 followed by two finals competitions March 3-4.

The FIS Nordic Ski World Cup continues March 3-4 with freestyle sprint, women's 10k and men's 15k classic events.​

Fresh off some strong performances at the Games, Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.), Michael Glasder (Cary, Ill.), Will Rhoads (Park City, Utah) and Casey Larson (Barrington, Ill.) are back on the World Cup circuit for two events in Lahti, Finland. HS130 qualifications will take place on Friday, March 2 followed by a team event on March 3 and an individual jump on March 4.

FIS Nordic Combined World Cup - Lahti, FIN
Taylor Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), Jasper Good (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), Ben Berend (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Ben Loomis (Eau Claire, Wis.) will compete in a team event on March 3 and an individual event on March 4 in Lahti, Finland.

FIS Snowboard World Cup - La Molina, ESP
U.S. Snowboard Team members Jonathan Cheever (Park City, Utah) and Alex Deibold (Boulder, Colo.) will lead the way for the U.S. at this weekend’s snowboardcross World Cup in La Molina, Spain. Qualifications will take place on Friday, March 2 followed by finals on Saturday, March 3.

FIS Snowboard World Cup - Kayseri, TUR
Americans Steve Maccutcheon and Ryan Rosencranz will represent the U.S. at the parallel giant slalom World Cup in Kayseri, Turkey. Qualifiers and finals will take place on Saturday, March 3.

Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) was selected to lead the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team into Sunday's Closing Ceremony as flag bearer, as announced today by the United States Olympic Committee. Diggins was chosen by a vote of fellow members of Team USA.

A two-time Olympian, Diggins made history at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 along with teammate Kikkan Randall, winning Team USA’s first-ever medal for women in cross-country skiing as the pair captured the gold medal in the freestyle team sprint. Diggins powered through the finish, outlasting the team from Sweden in a near-photo finish, winning the Olympic title by 0.19 seconds. It marked the second medal for the U.S. in cross-country skiing in Olympic history, with the first – a silver – won in 1976.

“This is such an incredible honor for me,” said Diggins. “I’m really humbled and moved that the athletes voted for me. It’s so inspiring to feel the support and cheering from everyone. The coolest thing for me about the Games has been getting to meet other athletes on Team USA, and getting to cheer them on at their events and learn about what they do. I have so much respect and admiration for everybody here and am beyond honored to be able to lead us out of these Games.”

In addition to Diggins’ gold medal-winning performance, she also posted four top-six finishes in these Games. Earlier in her career, Diggins was part of the first American team to win a world cup team sprint event, and she and Randall became the first U.S. cross-country skiers to win a world championship gold medal.

“Jessie’s breakthrough performances here in PyeongChang have been inspirational and historic, and her success is representative of years of teamwork and determination from all our athletes,” said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun. “I am proud that she has been recognized with the distinction of being our flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony. Her spirit and dedication to her sport and team members is contagious, and her influence on cross-country skiing and Team USA are remarkable.”  

Diggins is the first cross-country skier to serve as Closing Ceremony flag bearer for Team USA.

With the announced move of the Olympic alpine combined event from Friday to Thursday, Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) will not start in Wednesday’s Olympic downhill in order to focus on the combined.
“As much as I wanted to compete in the Olympic downhill, with the schedule change it’s important for me to focus my energy on preparing for the combined,” said Shiffrin. “I’m looking forward to cheering on our girls racing in the downhill and to compete myself in Thursday’s combined.
“This track is incredible and it has been so fun to ski these last few days. As with every downhill I have skied this year I am learning so much with each run. Each time I get to the finish I just want to go back to the top and do it again!”
Shiffrin had always planned to compete in the giant slalom, slalom and the alpine combined, with decisions to be made at games time relative to her participation in both the super-G and the downhill.
On Monday evening, organizers announced a move of the alpine combined from Friday to Thursday due to projected weather, including high winds. The men’s slalom will remain on Thursday.
The new start time for women’s alpine combined is 11:30 a.m. KT Thursday / 9:30 p.m. EST Wednesday. Men's slalom still will be held on Friday, but now will start at 10:00 a.m. KT / 8:00 p.m. EST Thursday.

Vonn Third in Second DH Training Run
Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) finished third in Monday’s second downhill training run at Jeongseon Alpine Centre. Alice McKennis (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) was ninth, followed by Breezy Johnson (Victor, Idaho) in 12th; Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) 16th; Laurenne Ross (Bend. Ore.) 19th; Alice Merryweather (Hingham, Mass.) 34th; and Stacey Cook (Mammoth Mountain, Calif.) 38th.
Team USA will announce its starting lineup on Tuesday for the women’s downhill, scheduled to start Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. KT / 9:00 p.m. EST Tuesday.

Sigourney, Drew Bowman Advance to Medal Round
Brita Sigourney (Carmel, Calif.), Annalisa Drew (Andover, Mass.) and Maddie Bowman (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) will compete in the ski halfpipe medal round, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday KT / 8:30 p.m. EST Monday.
Sigourney was the top American, laying down a pair of consistent runs to finish third in qualifying Monday at Phoenix Snow Park.
“In Sochi I was coming off a couple surgeries, not to mention I’m older, I have more experience and I listen to my body,” Sigourney said. “I know when to push it and I know when to take a break. Things are a bit different this time around.”
Canada's Cassie Sharpe was the top qualifier, followed by France's Marie Martinod. Drew was fourth, while Bowman was sixth.
Devin Logan (West Dover, Vt.) finished 15th with a score of 71.60 on her first run and did not advance to the final.

Jamie Anderson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.), Julia Marino (Westport, Conn.) and Jessika Jenson (Rigby, Idaho) advanced to the finals, which are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday KT / 7:30 p.m. EST Thursday.
Anderson, the two-time Olympic champion in women's snowboard slopestyle, led the way for the Americans, placing sixth. Marino was ninth, while Jenson was 12th. Hailey Langland (San Clemente, Calif.) just missed advancing, placing 14th.
Anna Gasser of Austria was the top qualifier, as Japan's Yuka Fujimori was second.

Vonn Sixth as Ledecky Stuns Super-G Favorites
One mistake cost Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) a shot at another Olympic medal. But it was one fast snowboarder who took a second Olympic super-G gold away from Austria’s Anna Veith.
Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic, the World Cup overall snowboard parallel giant slalom leader and the odds-on favorite for Olympic gold in PGS, came out of the 26th start position to win the super-G gold medal, and pick up her first-ever alpine skiing podium finish Saturday at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre Saturday. Veith, the defending Olympic super-G gold medalist took the silver, and Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein won the bronze, her first Olympic medal.
After an hour's delay due to high winds, Vonn, running bullet with bib 1, was well on her way to laying down a medal-contending run until she came in wide on the third to final gate, scrubbing precious speed before crossing the line.
“I thought running bib 1 was either going to be really great or really bad, and it didn’t quite turn out the way I’d hoped,” Vonn said. "I left it all out on the hill … I just made one mistake, and that cost me a medal. It’s ski racing, and that’s why it’s so difficult to win at the Olympics because literally, anything can happen.”

Voisin Fourth, Logan 10th in Slopestyle
Maggie Voisin (Whitefish, Mont.) returned to the Olympics, finishing fourth, and Devin Logan (Mount Snow, Vt.) was 10th in slopestyle freeskiing Saturday at Phoenix Snow Park at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
“I had an injury four years ago and wasn’t able to compete at Sochi, that day four years ago I told myself I would do whatever it takes to get back to the 2018 games and here I am," Voisin said. "It was a rollercoaster over the last four years with a lot of ups and downs. I have to find the positive in every situation and it's a win in itself to just drop in at my first Olympics.”On her final run, Switzerland's Sarah Hoefflin moved past her teammate Mathilde Gremaud to claim the gold medal, as Gremaud won the silver medal.

Lillis Advances to Medal Round
Jonathan Lillis (Pittsford, N.Y.) posted the highest score in qualifying for the final in men's aerials Saturday evening at the Phoenix Snow Park. Lillis scored 127.44 on his back full-double full-full in the first qualifying run led the field, 0.74 points ahead of China's Qi Guangpu.
“These big contests are when I seem to jump the best,” said Lillis. “I won World Championships last year, and I just wanted to keep that momentum going.”
Lillis will be the only American in Sunday's final after Mac Bohonnon (Madison, Conn.) and Eric Loughran (Pelham, N.H.) were unable to advance. Bohonnon's 112.39 ranked 17th among the competitors in the second qualification run, while Loughran was 25th with an 86.28.
The final is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 18 at 8:00 p.m. KT / 6:00 a.m. EST.

Olympic-Best Relay Finish For Team USA
Team USA finished fifth, in the 4x5k relay Saturday evening at the Alpensia Cross Country Skiing Centre at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
“That was our best Olympic finish ever,” said Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, Alaska), who along with her teammates Sophie Caldwell (Peru, Vt.), Sadie Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash) and Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) finished 1:20.5 off the gold medal time of Team Norway. “While we tend to be really focused on the medals because we know deep in our hearts that it is possible, it’s amazing to put together four strong legs and to get that best ever result.”

SKI JUMPING
Bickner Soars to 20th
Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) soared to the best Team USA ski jumping performance since the 2002 Olympics, finishing 20th in the large hill competition Saturday night at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre. Bickner had been 18th in the normal hill round earlier in the week.
“My goal coming into the season was to be in the top 20 at the Olympics,” said Bickner. “I was expecting a better result on the large hill so that surprised me a bit. But unlike the normal hill (where he was 18th), I was able to put together two really consistent jumps together and shows the level I’m at right now.”
Bickner flew 129.5 and 124.0 meters. Poland's Kamil Stoch took gold.
Team USA will wrap up the Olympic ski jumping program on Monday night with the four-man team competition.

Shiffrin Comes Up Short in Slalom
Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.), the defending slalom gold medalist from the 2014 Sochi Games, just missed the podium, finishing fourth, in Friday’s slalom at Yongpyong Alpine Centre.
“It’s not about the medals, it’s about how I feel on my skis,” Shiffrin said. “And today I didn’t feel like myself. Coming here today and skiing real conservative was a huge, huge disappointment.”
Shiffrin struggled to find her rhythm on her first run, finishing fourth almost a half-second off the pace set by Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener. She found her groove on the second run, only to make a costly mistake near the bottom of the course that cost her precious time.
“I know I have the best slalom turns in the world, but I didn’t put it out in the two runs where it mattered,” Shiffrin added. “Sometimes I feel like in slalom that the only one who can beat me in slalom is me. And I beat myself in the wrong way today.” … READ MORE / RESULTS

Olsen Goes Big in Medal Round
Madison Olsen (Park City, Utah) punched her ticket to the medal round in women’s aerials on Friday night. After advancing through the first and second round of finals with two lower degree of difficulty jumps, Olsen went for broke and attempted a full, double full for the first time on snow. She missed the landing, but finished an impressive sixth in her first Olympics. It was the best U.S. women’s performance Nikki Stone won in Calgary in 1998.
“That was my first time doing that jump on snow, so I was definitely really nervous,” said Olsen. “But, I figured, why not do it in the super final at the Olympics? I could have hit a little bit of a better take off. I got into my twist and when I came out to land, I was just a bit under rotated. I’ll get it next time! I was really just enjoying the moment. The adrenaline was just pumping through my body and I was just super excited to be out there jumping and having a good time. Team USA Fired Up For 4x5k Relay
Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) will lead a strong Team USA lineup in the women's 4x5k cross country relay on Saturday. Team USA announced its team that will include Sophie Caldwell (Peru, Vt.) and Sadie Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash.) on the opening two classic technique legs followed by Kikkan Randall (Anchorage) and Diggins closing out on the freestyle technique spots.
Each of the four U.S. women has been on a World Cup podium in an individual event this season. "All four athletes are clearly in top shape and we feel this team is our best chance to bring home a medal for the USA," said Head Coach Chris Grover."Relays are my all-time favorite events and a medal would be the coolest thing because it shows the depth of our team," said Diggins. "You don’t get anywhere in life alone! We have a committed team of was staff giving me this awesome opportunity. I am fired up for the relay."
The relay is set for 6:30 p.m. KT / 4:30 a.m. EST Saturday.

Patterson 19th in 15k
Scott Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska), competing in his first Olympic Winter Games, lead the way for Team USA, finishing 19th, in the men’s 15k freestyle Friday at the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre.
Erik Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash.) was 41st, Noah Hoffman (Aspen, Colo.) 48th, and , Tyler Kornfield (Anchorage, Alaska) 74th.

Two Into Large Hill Finals
Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) and Norge Ski Club teammate Michael Glasder (Cary, Ill.) soared into Saturday’s large hill medal round in Friday night’s qualifying.
Bickner soared 122.5 meters to finish 35th. Glasder was 38th going 222.5m.
" My trial round gives me the confidence to be an underdog tomorrow in the medal round,” said Bickner.
Will Rhoads (Park City, Utah) missed finals by a mere two-tenths of a point. Casey Larson (Barrington, Ill.) was also just outside the qualification mark.
The large hill finals get underway at 9:30 p.m. KT / 7:30 a.m. EST Saturday.

SNOWBOARD
Jacobellis Just Misses SBX Medal
Lindsey Jacobellis (Roxbury, Conn.) finished fourth in women's snowboardcross Friday afternoon at Phoenix Park.
Jacobellis, the only American rider to survive the quarterfinals, took the early lead in the big final, but was overtaken on the bottom third of the course before a rider fell in front of her near the finish, which may have been the difference between fourth and a spot on the podium.
“On this course, you really don’t want to have the holeshot because someone is going to draft you,” Jacobellis said. “But that is kind of the risk you take because you don’t want to be stuck in traffic. Sarah Hendrickson (Park City, Utah) soared into the darkness Monday night at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Center to lead the USA women in their normal hill Olympic competition. Hendrickson, making her second Olympic appearance, finished 19th. Norway’s Maren Lundby took gold with Katharina Althaus of Germany silver. Bronze went to Japan’s Sara Takanashi, one of the sport’s biggest stars who had missed the medals in its debut in 2014.

Hendrickson combined jumps of 86.0 and 88.0 meters for a score of 160.6. In her Olympic debut, veteran Abby Ringquist (Park City, Utah) soared 77.0 and 90.0 meters to finish 29th. Nita Englund (Florence, Wis.), also in her first Olympics, was 31st.

“I came here to smile and have fun,” said Hendrickson. “It’s the Olympics - there’s nothing better than that.”

The event was another milestone for the American pioneers of women’s ski jumping with Ringquist taking the final ride of her career. “I’m so proud of myself for pushing myself the last four years and working my butt off to get to the Olympics,” said Ringquist, who had narrowly missed the 2014 team. “It’s been such a unique experience - I’m living my childhood dream.”

Like Hendrickson, she sees herself as a mentor to new athletes coming into the sport. “There are some great young girls coming up and I was lucky enough to watch them compete in a World Cup a few years ago and pass the torch. I look forward to guiding them.”

Hendrickson also reflected on the growth of the sport. “The progression of women’s ski jumping since Sochi is tremendous. We have way more athletes and countries and I’m proud to be a part of it. It’s cool to see younger girls coming up - we love to see them on the start list and look to the future.”

Englund had to nervously wait out the round, just missing the cut in 31st hoping to get a second jump.

All three Olympians will remain in PyeongChang taking in the Olympics and marching in the closing ceremony. Both Hendrickson and Englund are expected to finish up with the World Cup tour in March.

Men’s Downhill Postponed
Due to the strong wind, Sunday's men's downhill was rescheduled for Thursday, February 15 at 11:00 a.m. KT/9:00 p.m. EST Wednesday. The men's super-G will now move to Friday, February 16 at 11:00 a.m. KT / 9:00 p.m. EST Thursday. Based on the official forecast, the jury has also canceled Monday’s alpine combined downhill training.

Freeski Athletes ‘Thrilled’ to Kick Off Games
The U.S. slopestyle team participated in their arrival press conference Sunday and it was clear that all the athletes are excited for training and competition to commence.
"It's an honor to be here, I'm excited to represent myself, my friends, my family and my country in two events and be the first athlete to do that,” said Sochi silver medalist Devin Logan (West Dover, Vt.). “I'm thrilled and hopefully I can bring home another Olympic medal."
For some, the PyeongChang Olympics are a chance at redemption, including Maggie Voisin (Whitefish, Mont.), who battled an injury at the Sochi Games.
“On the third day of training I fractured my fibula right above my ankle and I was not able to compete, which was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my career,” Voisin said. “I told myself that day four years ago that I was going to do whatever it took to make it back and to be sitting here with these incredible athletes that make up Team USA, I'm honored and ready to represent our country and show the world what we do." Nick Goepper (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) echoed that sentiment looking to improve his performance from the last Olympic games.
"I won a bronze medal in Sochi, and I would be lying if I said that I am not coming into this competition with a small chip on my shoulder," Goepper said.
Competition begins Friday with slopestyle freeskiing at 10:00 a.m. KT / 8 p.m. EST Thursday, with ladies qualifications. Men's competition will take place on February 18th.

Kauf Leads Team USA in Seventh
Team USA advanced all four athletes to the moguls finals Sunday night after Tess Johnson (Vail, Colo.) won the second qualification run at the Phoenix Snow Park to join her three teammates in this evening's final round.
With heavy snow falling during the second run of the finals, Team USA skied well but came up short with Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) just missing out on qualifying for the third final run - finishing seventh. Keaton McCargo (Telluride, Colo.) was eighth, Johnson finished 12th with Morgan Schild (Pittsford, N.Y.) in 15th.
The men will have second qualifying run prior to the finals on Monday night. Troy Murphy (Bethel, Maine) qualified for the finals following his fourth-place finish in the first qualifying round Friday. Patterson 18th In Skiathlon
Scott Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska) led the way for Team USA, finishing 18th as the men opened with a 30k skiathlon in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games Sunday afternoon at the Alpensia Cross Country Skiing Center.
“My first Olympic race was awesome,” said Patterson. “You know, World Cup-Olympic, they are kind of similar, and then you get here and they’re nothing at all the same.”
Patterson was 27th at the midway point of the 30-kilometer race, which featured 15k of classic, followed by 15k of freestyle, when the athletes switched from the classic to the freestyle technique.
“The first couple of laps the pack really spread out and then I relaxed,” Patterson said. “We switched over to skate and really felt like I knew what I was doing. Then just picked off a few people and put together a great race overall.” … READ MORE / RESULTS

Red Gerard Wins Slopestyle Gold
Red Gerard (Silverthorne, Colo.) stomped the run of his life to win Team USA’s first gold medal of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games Sunday in slopestyle snowboarding.
"When that score came up my jaw dropped," said Gerard, who is the youngest Olympic snowboarding gold medalist ever. "I was like ‘this isn’t real’. I would have been happy to just land a run, but to land a run and win, it’s crazy."
Sitting well out of medal contention after crashing out on his first two of three runs, Gerard absolutely nailed his third run with a score of 87.16 and withstood a stout challenge from Canada's Max Parrot, whose third and final run score of 86.00 was good enough for silver. Parrot's teammate, Mark McMorris, tallied an 85.20 on his second run for his second consecutive Olympic bronze medal. "I’m just insanely excited right now," said Gerard, "I can’t believe it all worked out. I just wanted to land a run. After falling on my second run, I was really excited for the third run."

Goldberg Eighth In Final Downhill Training

Women’s Moguls Finals Sunday
The U.S. women’s moguls team will compete in the medal round on Sunday. Diggins Just Seconds From A Medal
Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) posted the best U.S. women’s Olympic cross country finish in history, placing fifth in the skiathlon event as the first medals of the Olympic Winter Games were awarded Saturday afternoon at the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Center.
“I’m really proud of my race. I could not have pushed harder,” said Diggins. “Being seconds away from a medal and seeing it right there - I know it’s possible, I know I have what it takes. I think I’m in a good place in these games.”
The event combined two 7.5 km legs, the first skied in the classic style with a second leg raced in the freestyle technique. Diggins was 10th at the halfway transition, 5.4 seconds off the pace. She was able to take 3.3 seconds off that lead by the halfway point of the second leg, but a grueling pace set by Sweden's Charlotte Kalla over the last three kilometers left the field fighting for silver.
Calla covered the 15 km in 40:44.9 to claim the first gold medal of the Games, 7.8 seconds ahead of silver medalist Marit Bjoergen of Norway. Finland's Krista Parmakoski won the bronze medal in 40:55.0. Diggins posted a time of 40:59.6.

Starting for Team USA in the 30k men’s skiathlon Sunday are Erik Bjornsen (Winthrop, Wash.), Scott Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska), Noah Hoffman (Aspen, Colo.), and Paddy Caldwell (Lyme Center, N.H.).
“I’m very excited and anxious to get the racing started,” Bjornsen said. “The 30k skiathlon should be a good event for me. I’d love to start things off on a high note!”

SKI JUMPING
Bickner 18th in Men’s HS109 Finals
Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) placed 18th on the men's normal hill in ski jumping competition at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Center Saturday evening - the best U.S. Olympic result since Alan Alborn was 11th in the normal hill at 2002 Olympics.
The Norge Ski Club athlete soared to 14th after his first ride with the second longest jump of the round at 109.0 meters.
"Before I came here my goal was to have a top 20 - I've now achieved that," said Bickner. "Given the day I had, I think I can set my expectations higher. I’ll try to take my first jump tonight and transfer it over to the big hill."
His first jump was a huge motivator for Bickner. "Everything just really worked out," he said. "All the little things I was tweaking through the week came together, I got lucky with wind and I was able to throw one down to the bottom."
Germany's Andreas Wellinger took the win. One of the favored nations, Poland, was shut out of the medals as Norway's Johann Andre Forfan took silver and Robert Johansson bronze.
It was a cold, blustery night on the jumps with wind forcing multiple delays and pushing the competition to past midnight.

Gerard Qualifies For Medals Round
Red Gerard (Silverthorne, Colo.) earned a spot in the final round of men's snowboard slopestyle during qualifying runs Saturday at the Phoenix Sports Park.
Currently the FIS Snowboard World Cup leader, Gerard placed third among the 18 riders in the second qualifying heat Saturday, scoring 82.55 points. He trailed a pair of Canadians - Max Parrot, who led with an 87.36, and Mark McMorris, who posted an 86.83. American Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, Mich.) finished 11th with a best score of 53.55 and did not qualify for the finals.
In the first qualifying heat, Chris Corning (Silverthorne, Colo.) and Ryan Stassel (Anchorage, Alaska) were unable to advance, finishing ninth and 17th respectively. The men's snowboard slopestyle finals begin at 10 a.m. KT Sunday/8 p.m. EST Saturday.

Kevin Bickner (Wauconda, Ill.) soared to 18th Saturday night at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre on the HS109 meter normal hill jump. It was the best U.S. finish since 2002. Germany's Andreas Wellinger took gold. Poland was shut out of the medals with Norway's Johann Andre Forfang winning silver and Robert Johansson bronze.

Bickner's finish was the best U.S. Olympic showing since Alan Alborn was 11th on the normal hill at the 2002 Olympics.

On a cold, blustery night, wind delays pushed the competition until after midnight. Bickner was the only American to make the top 30 cut after the first round, but Olympic Trials winner Michael Glasder (Cary, Ill.) came close at 32nd.

"Before I came here my goal was to have a top 20 - I achieved that," said Bickner. "Given the day I had, I think I can set my expectations higher. I’ll try to take my first jump tonight and transfer it over to the big hill."

Bickner's first round jump of 109.0 meters was second longest. "Everything just really worked out," he said. "All the little things I was tweaking through the week came together, I got lucky with wind and I was able to throw one down to the bottom."

The men return Friday for large hill qualifying. The women are up next on the normal hill with their medal round Monday evening.

ALPINE
Bennett Sixth in Second Downhill Training
For the second-straight day, Bryce Bennett (Squaw Valley, Calif.) led Team USA in downhill training on the Jeongseon downhill track, finishing sixth, on a weather-shortened course.

“A little wind picked up today so they had to lower the start, and it changed the snow for the better - firmed it up,” Bennett said after starting from the super-G start in Friday’s training. “It’s definitely faster.”

Despite the lower start, Bennett was able to make some adjustments on the lower portion of the track in his search for speed.

“After the first training run I wanted to make some adjustments on the top of the course ... and some minor changes through the bottom,” Bennett said. “Out of Dragon Alley, you can jump a section, and it seems to be going faster, so I wanted to make that adjustment.”

The third and final training run on Saturday will offer the athletes one more opportunity to dial in their lines before Sunday’s race.

Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.) was 24th Friday; Jared Goldberg (Holladay, Utah) 26th; Thomas Biesemeyer (Keene, N.Y.) 28th; Wiley Maple (Aspen, Colo.) 31st; and Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah), who will compete in the alpine combined event on February 13, was 33rd.

FREESTYLE
Schild, Kauf, McCargo, Qualify For Medal Round
Team USA qualified three of its four women’s moguls skiers into Sunday night’s medal round in the first of two qualifying rounds Friday at Phoenix Park.

Morgan Schild (Pittsford, N.Y.) qualified third with a score of 77.74, 1.98 behind the leader, Perrine Laffont of France. Jaelin Kauf (Alta, Wyo.) was fifth with a 77.45, while Keaton McCargo (Telluride, Colo.) posted a 75.67, good for eighth place.

The fourth American in the field, Tess Johnson, placed 22nd with a score of 65.55. The top 10 skiers from Friday advanced to the medal round. Johnson will have another chance to make the field of 20 during a second qualifier scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. KT/5:30 a.m. EST.

Murphy Qualifies For Medal Round
Troy Murphy (Bethel, Maine) finished fourth in the first men's freestyle skiing moguls qualification round Friday afternoon at the Phoenix Snow Park, securing a spot in Monday's medal round.

Murphy earned a score of 80.95 points, 5.12 behind the top score of 86.07, which went to Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

Three other American skiers finished outside the top 10 and now look to earn a spot in the finals by way of Monday's second qualifying run, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. KT/5:30 a.m. EST. Casey Andringa (Boulder, Colo.) and Bradley Wilson (Butte, Mont.) each received a 75.25 to place 14th and 15th, respectively, while Emerson Smith (Dover, Vt.) was 22nd by virtue of the 72.59 he earned from the judges.

Women’s Skiathlon Kicks Off Olympics
The women’s 7.5k/7.5k skiathlon kicks off the Olympics as the first medal event. Athletes will ski 7.5k of classic technique, pull into the pits to change skis, then go another 7.5k using freestyle technique or skating. Team USA will start Rosie Brennan (Anchorage, Alaska), Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.), Caitlin Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska) and Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, Alaska). It will be the first Olympic start for Brennan and Patterson. Diggins was fifth in a 7.5k/7.5k skiathlon this past December in Lillehammer, Norway.

Start time is 4:15 p.m. KT/2:15 a.m. EST.
